I don’t have the specifics to comment on this case. In general, FP=family physicians have a list of consultants=specialists they routinely use in everyday practice, usually not more than 1 per specialty. If a patient is unhappy with a particular consultant, FP is NOT responsible for the conflict patient has with that particular consultant. It is the consultant’s role to arrange a second opinion if patient does not agree with consultant’s recommendation. FP does NOT get involved with that, in general. In my own practice, when a patient questions my recommendation on reasonable grounds, I will be glad to arrange a second opinion from a colleague who is an authority in the field in question. That being said, if I sense that patients have been acting unreasonable, I would be very quick to show them the door. :)
