Usually, you should try to use diet (low sodium, high fibre and more vegetables) and exercise (regular moderate exercise such as walking 30mins to 40 mins daily) to control your high blood pressure. If it does not work, then beside the changes in diet and exercise habits, you will be put on one kind of diuretics to lower your blood pressure. If it still does not reach your goal in controlling high blood pressure, you will be put on a combination of several different kinds of medication, such as diuretics, beta blockers, ACE inhibitors, Calsium Channel blockers etc. These drugs work differently to control blood pressure. If you can control your blood pressure just by changing your eating habit and exercise more often, that will do it. Otherwise, you might need to take one drug or be put on a combination of several drugs.
