Acturally what 647 said probably is wrong. I was also mislead by him, I check my modem, the SNR was 13 and I thought it's bad. Then I did some google ,

I found
http://whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/341026.html

It's a long post. seach "Jock M", He is the guy know ADSL. according to him,

Bad : 0-6
Fair : 6-10
Good : 10-15
Fair : 15-20
Bad : 20-30

Also check http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=wiki&tag=ADSL_Theory,

Although I can't really understand it, I tend to believe what it says.

At first glance if SNR is very high then it's good: almost no noise which drives the ratio higher. And the less noise the better and easier for modem.

Unfortunately some noise is always present and noise always has frequency distribution. Which means all spectrum is polluted by noise (strictly speaking different parts of it are polluted to different extent). So the less spectrum you use the less noise you are getting. ADSL is using spectrum in small chunks so if someone (SNR setting on DSLAM) is forcing you (the modem) to have very good SNR, then you might limit the spectrum you use in order to get rid of the noise.

    • call bell, there may be a problem in ur line. i had similar problem a couple of weeks ago, found it's outside line problem.
      • But the strange thing is, the connection problem only happens at night time after dinner. I called Bell 2 weeks ago, they can not figure out what problem it is. Maybe should call again, so tired to talk to them.
    • login in the router at http://192.168.2.1 find "DSL log" page, get the number SNR and Attention.
if SNR is less than 15, your line quality is bad. good line quality SNR value is 35+,
if Attentionis more than 40, you are far from the CO(Bell Central Office) or line quality is bad too.

if above two are fine, it might be Bell CO or Bell infrastructure network probelm.

Just for give you more clue when you talk to Bell support, if the 1st support don't understand those terms and number, ask to esclate to second level right away.
      • My SNR only 10+ and Attantion is 51 looks line quality is bad what I can do?
        • snr less than 12 is very bad. attention is 51, even higher than mine(45, is bad enough), too bad!! call sympatical complaint about the line(the physical media, the line, the cord) quality
        • the normal snr should be 30 or higher (Unit of Measure is db, 30 is 10 times better than 20), Attention less than 42.
          • after called bell, the 2nd level support guy did somthing on their side, now the DSL connection looks OK ( continues 3days no drop) but the SNR and Attention still same.
