For what its worth, here's my two cents worth on all these virus
issues:
My network got hit with the "W32.Opaserv.K" virus
(http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.opaserv.k
.worm.html) last week and two of my computers (both running 98) got
completely wiped out, literally! No joke!!! HDD partition got
corrupted, everything wiped out (thank god it didn't get my computer!)
If you value your data be warned, this is some serious shit. Once it
gets activated, your toast! Even if you create backups on a separate
drive, *ALL drives* connected to the computer will be wiped clean, no
chance of recovery! (Both my bro's computer had separate drive's and
everything was wiped out.) I never believed a virus could case so
much damage, now I know!
So just be sure to:
- Backup all important data, preferably to a removable storage.
- Always have an antivirus program running in the background. And
keep it updated otherwise it's useless.
- If possible stop using 98, far to many security loop holes.
- Be sure to update your OS. A lot of people miss this one, yet it's
the most crucial! MS provides security patches almost weekly!
- If possible install a firewall or use a router. FYI, XP has its own
built-in firewall. Not the best but better then nothing.
