Some of you have approached me and asked about the impact that the recent 7.9-magnitude earthquake in China has imposed to my family. I want to thank those of you who extended your warm concern and care about my family. Fortunately they are all doing well.
My parents and most of my close relatives live in the provincial capital city of Chengdu, which is about only 100KM from Wenchuan, the epicenter of this disasterous earthquake. The earthquake happened at around 2am Toronto time this past Monday, and was strongly felt by people living in my city. A couple of hours after the earthquake I was wakened up by a call from my cousin in Boston. We both tried to contact our family and relatives in Chengdu but phone calls did not go through. All the cell phones were not working at that time. Land lines were working but nobody was staying at home. Fortunately it had not been too long before my friend in another part of China was finally able to talk to my dad on phone. A few more hours later I myself resumed contact with my parents. Now I keep calling them twice a day to make sure everything is ok. Again fortunately they are doing fine after 3,000+ aftershocks in the past couple of days. Now my parents do not have to stay outdoor any longer and there is no noticeable damage in their residency. Gas, water and electricity supplies in the city are as usual. Most shops and groceries still remain closed, but my parents are now able to buy food from a nearby market.
Thank you all for your support when I was experiencing this especially hard time.
In fact, my home city of Chengdu is very well protected from natural disasters by huge mountains surrounding it. However, this time, 1,215 deaths have been reported so far from this city. I could not imagine what a picture it is in the epicenter, where no poll has been released yet because all the communication and transportation had been lost. I feel the deepest sorrow for the reported 14,866 people who lost their lives in the disaster and the families behind them. I am also praying and wishing the best luck to those who are still buried under the collapsed buildings and waiting for rescue.
